Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival takes place over six northeastern North Carolina counties and six national wildlife refuges. Your Wings Over Water itinerary could take you from Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge on the Virginia/North Carolina border over one hundred miles south to Portsmouth Island. That means you need to check your schedule and map carefully (Google Maps is very helpful). For purposes of lodging we're using Nags Head and Roanoke Island as central locations.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Park Campgrounds (click here for web link)

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore camping season will begin in mid-April. The Oregon Inlet and Cape Point campgrounds will open for the season on Friday, April 14 and the Frisco and Ocracoke campgrounds will open on Friday, April 21. All four campgrounds will remain open until the season ends on November 27, 2017.

All campgrounds accommodate tents, trailers, and motor homes up to 35 feet. Each campground also provides rest rooms, potable water, showers, grills, and picnic tables. No hookups (utility connections) are available.

No more than six people and two vehicles may occupy a single campsite. Camping trailers, including pop-up campers, are considered vehicles. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, all camping is limited to a total of 14 days within a 30-day period. Quiet hours are between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Generators may not be operated during these hours.

Group camping is available at Oregon Inlet Campground. The group campsite accommodates groups of 7-30 people, including infants and toddlers. Due to the popularity of the group camping site, it is recommended that reservations be made at least two weeks in advance.

Camping in Cape Hatteras National Seashore is permitted only in designated campgrounds. Camping on beaches is prohibited. Pets must be physically restrained at all times on a leash not exceeding 6 feet in length. For more information, please go to www.nps.gov/caha.

Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-444-6777, or on the Internet at www.recreation.gov, and can be made up to six months in advance.

Added in the 2016 camping season, Cape Point Campground visitors are able to make advance reservations for camping. Oregon Inlet, Frisco, and Ocracoke Campground visitors will continue to be able to make advanced reservations for campsites and reservations are currently being taken.

Pettigrew State Park

The distance between Roanoke Island (Manteo) and Pettigrew State Park is 42 miles.

Visitors can explore 16,000-acre Lake Phelps and its surrounding landscape by land or water at Pettigrew State Park. The fishing is legendary and boaters with kayaks, canoes and shallow-draft boats will find easy launch sites. Also, nearby access allows boaters onto the placid, blackwater Scuppernong River. Trails wind past some of the oldest, most majestic trees in the coastal region, and bikes are allowed on most trails. A 13-site family campground and a group campground are close to park amenities, and picnic grounds make good use of a shading cypress grove and grassy lawn. The park is rich in history with a display of ancient American Indian dugout canoes, and the grave of a Confederate general.  http://www.ncparks.gov/pettigrew-state-park
